Stranraer, at the head of Loch Ryan and the gateway to the Rhinns of Galloway, is the destination of our midweek special train.  Hauled initially by one of our electric locomotives, you will travel in First Class comfort in our luxurious Saphos coaching stock.  At Carlisle, our electric locomotive will be replaced and the train will proceed forward with a heritage Class 47 and both of our Class 20 diesel locomotives.

Our journey will take us along the West Coast Main Line to the border city, before we head to Dumfries and then the normally freight only route from Mauchline Junction to Newton on Ayr.  From there, we follow the west coast with breathtaking views over the sea to the Isle of Arran and Ailsa Craig, the striking bird sanctuary that is home to 36,000 pairs of gannets!

After a leg stretch break at Stranraer and the opportunity to take some photographs, we will follow the scenic coastline back to Ayr, birthplace of Scotland’s national bard, Robert Burns.  We pass three beautiful Lochs at Kilbirnie, Barr and Castle Semple before we reach Paisley and take a second freight only route, this time from Shields Junction to Larkfield Junction.  Following the West Coast Main Line once again, we soon reach Carlisle where our electric locomotive re-joins the train for our set down stations back to Crewe.
